How to (and not to) Work with a Designer
This is an excellent article about what you should and should not do and/or expect when working with a web designer.
I especially agree with #6: Make sure your message and content are clear.
As a web designer, it is very difficult to come up with a truly unique and fascinating design when the client doesn’t absolutely know what he wants to say with his website. And it’s so much easier to design a beautiful and well-organized site when all content and images have been submitted early in the project. Trying to create the design before content/images have been decided upon is like trying to put the horse before the….well, you know.
I agree with #7, too. It’s important to design for your potential customer.
Your favorite color may be bright orange and you might really like the effects of a flash presentation, but will these things draw and keep your customers? Are they related to the message you want to send with your website? Will they enhance the ability of all customers to access your website regardless of browser choice, browsing habits, or physical abilities? If not, save it for a personal site where it won’t hurt your credibility with your customer base.
